En février 2024, il avait commencé son projet intitulé the sons we are because Matant was there en résidence à la Galerie d'art Beaverbrook.
The construction of identity is never entirely fixed. It remains adaptive, shifting, and constantly shaped by the environments we move through. Even in the awareness of a transformed body, this capacity for adaptation recalls a deeply animal and instinctive part of our existence: the impulse to alter our behavior, our appearance, or our way of being in response to our surroundings, to ensure a form of preservation.
But what is the true cost of this adaptation? As we continually transform ourselves to belong, to protect, or to survive, what becomes of our perception of an authentic self? Does it blur, dissolve into the multiplicity of personas we take on?
Between the instinct for preservation and the desire to be oneself, isn’t identity, ultimately, a territory of constant negotiation? A space where masks overlap, shift, and readjust, where the image of self, flickers like a green screen in perpetual recomposition.
SHALOM de SOUZA is an emerging artist from Benin. He earned a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Moncton in 2025. His artistic practice draws inspiration from the anonymous traces left in public spaces—graffiti, tags, and ephemeral marks—which he incorporates into a visual exploration of the urban environment and its contemporary dynamics. His work was featured in 2024 as part of the group exhibition *Trace interconnectée*, and then in 2025 during the University of Moncton’s visual arts graduation exhibition. He is also currently participating in the group exhibition *Ancré*. SHALOM de SOUZA favors an experimental approach, using all-over composition to transcend the limits of traditional painting frameworks, as well as automatic composition, which leaves room for intuition and spontaneous gesture in the creative process. Social media also plays a significant role in his practice, allowing him to observe and analyze new forms of visual expression emerging from digital culture. Through a fusion of media and techniques, his work establishes a dialogue between street art, new technologies, and traditional forms of visual expression, offering a reflection on identity, collective memory, and the presence of human traces in public spaces.
ROTCHILD CHOISY is a multidisciplinary artist who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2022) from the University of Moncton. Originally from Haiti, Rotchild currently lives in Moncton, New Brunswick. He has presented his work in a series of solo exhibitions at the Alliance Française cultural center, the Louise and Reuben Cohen Art Gallery, and the Salle Sans Sous at Galerie Sans Nom, all in Moncton. He has also received several leadership grants, as well as the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation Merit Grant in 2020. He recently presented his work in a solo exhibition at the Capitol Theater Art Gallery titled E.S.M.I, at the 7th edition of the Sudbury Alternative Art Festival, and in a group installation at the Académie Sainte-Famille as part of Dialogues Riopelle, celebrating the artist’s 100th anniversary, and was selected for the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Studio Watch in 2023. In February 2024, he began his project titled *the sons we are because Matant was there* during a residency at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. His most recent projects seek to combine poses, clothing, and the ways in which multiple identities can be created and interpreted through the wearing of masks to reflect on human behavior in the context of social interaction and intimacy.
